How to Ask for What You Need in a Relationship

We talk a lot about how to be “better”—better men, better husbands, better parents. And a lot of those conversations are about how we can show up to make sure we’re meeting the needs of our loved ones.

But the reality is that it’s not one-sided…that to truly create balance in our lives and relationships, we are responsible for asking our loved ones for what we need.

Asking for what you need in a relationship can feel like a daunting task, especially if you’re not sure how to go about it. Fortunately, there are strategies that you can use to make this easier and less intimidating. Let’s take a look at some of the tips and tricks that can help you ask for what you need in your relationships.

Communicate Your Needs Clearly and Directly
When it comes to asking for what you need, it is important to be direct and concise. Make sure that your wording is clear and unambiguous so that your partner knows exactly what it is that you want or need from them. For example, instead of saying something like “I could use some help around the house”, say something like “I would really appreciate it if you could help me with the dishes tonight”. This makes it easier for your partner to understand exactly what it is that they should do.

Be Open-Minded
Being open-minded is essential when making requests in a relationship. Just because one approach doesn’t work doesn't mean that another won't work either. Don’t be afraid to consider different ways of doing things or different opinions on the matter - this will make it easier for both parties involved to come up with an agreeable solution. Additionally, being open-minded helps foster more positive communication between partners and encourages mutual respect, which are both key components of any healthy relationship.

Show Gratitude
Showing gratitude goes a long way in making sure your needs are met. Taking the time to show appreciation for your partner's efforts demonstrates that their efforts have been noticed and appreciated by yourself and others—which can often be enough incentive for them to continue going above and beyond even after their initial request has been fulfilled. Additionally, showing gratitude helps create an atmosphere of mutual support within the relationship which will make asking for further assistance down the road much easier than if no appreciation had been shown beforehand at all.

Making sure your needs are met in a relationship isn’t always easy but with these tips, it doesn't have to be difficult or intimidating either! By communicating your needs clearly and directly, being open-minded about different approaches towards fulfilling those needs, and showing gratitude whenever possible—you can ensure that both parties involved are content with whatever solution comes out of the discussion while still maintaining the integrity of the relationship itself!
