Empathy Revisited
A couple of weeks ago we featured a newsletter dealing with the topic of empathy. This is so important for men because we are not programmed to demonstrate empathy in our daily lives. On the other hand, women are taught to express this and they expect it from us.
I know I sound like I am harping on an old issue but the expression of empathy can change the dynamic in your relationships and the tone of any conversation.
Because we are programmed to want to fix things, our first response is usually advice on how to fix the issue. When our spouse or partner asks something of us, they are not asking us to fix an issue so much as to hear their concerns. A comment like, "I can see how that would be a real concern for you" or "That must be very troubling to you" can go a long way toward demonstrating hearing as well as understanding of the issue.
Put this to the test in the next conversation with your spouse or teenager.
