Beyond Resolutions to Genuine Change
Making New Year’s resolutions is good but I wonder if you have thought about making more significant changes in your life. Here are some suggestions to consider, many of which came from men who have subscribed to the Men in Balance program. Pick the ones you are willing to try and send us feedback about your success:
Be present for at least 90% of family events
Set aside 15 minutes daily for spiritual reflection
Hold weekly family meetings to catch up with everyone and model spiritual leadership
Ensure the entire family is in worship each week, especially young boys
Collaborate with your partner about family goals and priorities
Shower your partner with praise and affection daily
Be the peacemaker in conflict with your partner and family members while dealing with conflict straightforwardly
Learn techniques of consensus building and use them at home and at work
Have sharing sessions with your partner and open up emotionally and encourage your partner to do the same
Meet with your minister or counselor and ask for tips on being a good father and husband
If there are problems in your marriage, get counseling sooner rather than later
Get help in dealing with your anger if that is needed
Agree with your partner that there will be some technology-free time after dinner and include the kids
Ask your teenagers for an across-the-table sit down discussion. Inquire about their lives without making judgmental comments.
Squeeze out a couple hours each week to work for a charity or other worthy cause
Take the lead in making BIG celebrations of family milestones
Go an entire week without any criticism of your partner or children – – then make it permanent
Turn off the radio during your commute and use the time for spiritual reflection and centering
