Do You Have A Personal Spiritual Mission
Statement?
A friend of mine recently told me a story
about visiting his doctor. When the doctor asked how things were
going, he broke down in tears. He realized he had been under
tremendous stress as a result of economic conditions and the
threat of losing his job. All of a sudden, it was more than he
could manage and he simply lost it.
Now, during these difficult times, is more
important than ever to have a spiritual mission statement--to
know who we are and what we are all about. Most of us can recite
our company's mission statement and we realize how important it
is to keep us focused on the work we're doing. It is equally
important to have one for your spiritual life for the same
reasons. It keeps you grounded, it reminds you what is important
to you, and it focuses you on things that really matter.
As you begin to think about crafting a
spiritual mission statement, consider what are your values. What
are the things that define who you are and you would never
abandon. Jot down some of those values, especially as they
relate to family and loved ones, your personal development, and
relationship with God. Then begin to think how those values
determine the priorities of your life. Typically we make
decisions about priorities based upon the values we have
subscribed to.
Those priorities determine the decisions that
we make and how we spend our time. It should become obvious that
if your values are not clear or are out of line with what you're
trying to be, your priorities, decision making, and time
management will also be out of kilter.
Developing yourself spiritually is no
different than developing yourself physically--it requires
discipline and commitment. In areas such as daily devotions or
prayer, reading about spiritual issues, thinking about the
larger meaning of life, and talking to others about your
concerns and your feelings--all of these help us to develop into
whole human beings spiritually.
Remember:
VALUES--->Priorities--->Decisions--->Time Management
Below you'll find some examples of spiritual
mission statements to prod your thinking. After reading them,
jot down your thoughts about values and priorities and craft a
mission statement that makes sense to you. Share it with your
spouse or loved ones and measure yourself against it daily to
see how you're doing. If you have questions or would like to
share your mission statement send

Sample Mission Statements
My purpose for being on this earth is to help others
recognize, develop, and use their God-given intuitive abilities
to ease suffering and grow in goodness, love, compassion, and
wisdom. My mission is to help take away fear--the fear of death,
by proving that we don't die and will see our loved ones again,
and the fear of living, by showing how we can tap in to our
wisest selves and make our lives much happier and easier. My
desire is to help each of us connect to the love that is
eternal, that is the reason for our existence.
To remember where I have been and where I will go through
maintaining positive relationships with family and friends. To
choose the ethical way by making a personal commitment to
honesty and integrity. To find peacefulness within myself by
looking inward while using my heart to guide my dreams and
desires, and my mind to pursue knowledge, creating balance among
all of my obligations. To content myself in my surroundings so I
will always know where security lies within my life. To build a
reputation of being dedicated to every goal I choose to pursue
while having successes in both my personal and professional
life. To enjoy every moment along this journey finding laughter,
love, and happiness with each day that passes.
I want to be part of God's plan of what He is doing on
earth, and I want to bring Him glory.
MY MISSION IN LIFE IS TO SERVE GOD BY BEING: A beacon of
light, A bridge of understanding, A tower of integrity, and A
castle of realized dreams
I will live everyday with Integrity and vow to consistently
make a positive difference in the lives of others utilizing my
knowledge for the good of all people.
My mission is to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ,
walking the hard road and taking up my cross daily to do so.
To find happiness, fulfillment, and value in living, I
will seek out and experience all of the pleasures and joys that
life has to offer. My core values are not limitations
restraining me on this hedonistic quest for fun. Rather, they
provide a framework for identifying, pursuing, and achieving
those pleasures that last the longest and are the most
satisfying. The greatest joy of all is being worthy of the
respect and admiration of family, friends, and business
associates.
